The numbers come from Google's Play Console help pages as of November 2026.
The general rules
- Up to 8 screenshots per device type.
- At least 2 screenshots to publish.
- JPEG or 24-bit PNG.
- No transparency. A PNG with an alpha channel is refused.
- Short side at least 320 pixels, long side at most 3840.
- The long side can't be more than twice the short side.
That last rule is the one tall phones run into. A raw 1080 × 2400 screenshot has a ratio of 2.22, which is over the limit. Placing it inside a 9:16 frame with a device mockup around it fixes the problem without any cropping.
Phone
There's nothing phone-specific beyond the general rules. For recommendations and promotional spots Google asks for:
- Apps: at least 4 screenshots, at least 1080 pixels. Portrait at 9:16 and at least 1080 × 1920, or landscape at 16:9 and at least 1920 × 1080.
- Games: at least 3 landscape (1920 × 1080) or 3 portrait (1080 × 1920) screenshots.
We'd go with portrait 1080 × 1920. It meets the rule and lets you reuse the layout of your App Store images.
Tablets and Chromebook
For 7-inch and 10-inch tablets and Chromebooks you need at least 4 screenshots, with sides between 1080 and 7680 pixels, 9:16 for portrait and 16:9 for landscape.
A common mistake is uploading the phone screenshots scaled up. People browsing on a tablet want to see the tablet layout, so if your app has one, show it.
Wear OS and Android TV
- Wear OS: at least 1 screenshot, 1:1, at least 384 × 384 pixels. Watch faces follow the same rule.
- Android TV: at least 1 TV screenshot plus a 1280 × 720 TV banner (JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no transparency).
Android Automotive and Android XR have their own rules. XR wants between 4 and 8 images at 8:5, up to 8 MB each.
Icon and feature graphic
- App icon: 512 × 512 pixels, 32-bit PNG (transparency allowed), up to 1024 KB.
- Feature graphic: 1024 × 500 pixels, JPEG or 24-bit PNG, no transparency.
The feature graphic sits at the top of the store listing and in some collections. If you add a promo video, the play button lands in the middle of it, so keep anything important away from the centre.
Promo video
Google Play doesn't take a video file. It takes a YouTube link to a single video that is public or unlisted, with ads turned off and no age restriction. Playlists and channel links aren't accepted.
Only the first 30 seconds autoplay on the listing, and Google recommends showing the app in use within the first 10. A video that opens with a long logo animation wastes most of that.
Can you reuse App Store screenshots?
Partly. App Store sizes such as 1320 × 2868 have a ratio of 2.17, over Google's 2:1 limit, so the same design has to be exported again at 1080 × 1920.
In Mockup Center you can type any frame size. Export the same scene once at 1320 × 2868 and once at 1080 × 1920 and you have both stores covered. Also, don't show an iOS app inside an Android phone or the other way round; a Galaxy or Pixel suits Google Play images better. The Google Play screenshots page shows how.
Mistakes we keep seeing
- Uploading a transparent PNG, which gets refused. Export with a background.
- Tall raw screenshots that break the 2:1 rule.
- A wasted first image. The first two or three are what people see, so put the strongest feature there.
- Captions too small to read on a phone. Keep them short and large.
